If you are suffering from Post Natal Depression you're not alone. Believe it or not there are around 1000 cases diagnosed in the UK every week. In fact PND is the most common post-natal complication and it is very treatable. So take heart - although you may feel terrible at the moment, you will get through it and you will recover. It may take time and you must be patient with yourself but you can and will get there.
Neither does having Post Natal Depression mean you are 'a bit weird', 'mentally unstable' or that you are a weak person in some way. You didn't ask for this to happen to you. In fact the reality is that anyone can and does get PND regardless of wealth, IQ, age, etc. Just take a look at our list of celebrity sufferers and you'll see that it really can happen to anyone.
There is a tendency for women to keep quiet about the fact they have PND, as though it is something to be ashamed of. It isn't. In fact PND is an illness and should be treated like one. So try not to feel guilt or shame. It does not mean you are a bad mother and it certainly is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact being a mum and coping with PND mean that you are one tough cookie so be proud of that! You are doing really well.
Too many women suffer with Post Natal Depression in silence for fear of being judged by those around them. This is wrong and it needs to change. It takes courage to admit you have (or had) Post Natal Depression but talking openly about it when you are ready to will help build a climate of acceptance which in turn will help other sufferers.
This site contains a Photo Gallery which celebrates those who have recovered from Post NataI Depression. Please upload a photo of yourself as a celebration of your recovery or send one to us via email(perhaps with your child or family)- you deserve to be very proud of your achievement!
